London’s Wigmore Hall, awarded the Takács String Quartet with the Wigmore Hall Medal 2014. The Medal, inaugurated in 2007, recognises major international artists and significant figures in the classical music world who have a strong association with the Hall. The Takács Quartet made their debut at Wigmore Hall in 1979, as Gold Medal winners of the inaugural Portsmouth (now Wigmore Hall) International String Quartet Competition and are recognized as one of the world’s leading string quartets. In 2012 Wigmore Hall appointed the Takács Quartet as its first ever Associate Artists.
This is the first time a string quartet has been awarded the medal. Recent recipients of the award include András Schiff, Thomas Quasthoff, Menahem Pressler and Dame Felicity Lott.
