Bachhaus Eisenach
Eine der erfolgreichsten Ausstellungen des Bachhauses aus Eisenach, die 2009 konzipierte Schau ‘Blut und Geist – Bach, Mendelssohn und ihre Musik im Dritten Reich’, wird ab heute, dem 3. Februar im neueröffneten Mendelssohn-Haus in der Goldschmidtstraße in Leipzig gezeigt. Deutlich wird dabei, dass die Verstrickung von Musikschriftstellern und Musikwissenschaftlern in die NS-Rassenpolitik nach dem Kriegsende völlig folgenlos blieb. Die Ausstellung bleibt bis zum 31. Alexander Ivashkin

Cellist Alexander Ivashkin died from cancer in London on 31 January, aged 65. Born in Blagoveschensk, Russia, on 17 August 1948, Alexander Ivashkin started his music education at Gnessins Special School of Music for gifted students at the age of five, playing both piano and cello. It was the legendary Mstislav Rostropovich who suggested him to choose a career of a solo cellist. Ivashkin established an international reputation both as an interpreter of the standard repertoire and as a proponent of contemporary music. His highly acclaimed recitals, radio and TV recordings, and appearances with the orchestras have included performances in more than 30 countries. Alexander Ivashkin was also well known as a conductor.
St David’s Hall, Cardiff
Two of Wales’ best-known cultural venues – St David’s Hall and the New Theatre – are under threat as part of a huge cuts programme proposed by Cardiff council. This has been reported by Wales Online. Council officials say that, while making savings of £50m this year, they can no longer afford to subsidise the two buildings. St David’s Hall is Cardif’s major venue for classical concerts and the residence of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
Adrien Boisseau
Junge Musiker aus 23 verschiedenen Ländern präsentieren sich dem Publikum vom 7. bis zum 14. Februar im Grand Resort Bad Ragaz (CH). Neben Solokonzerten gibt es Kammermusik mit verschiedenen Formationen, vom Duo bis hin zum Oktett. Der Präsident des Landesmusikrates Hamburg, Prof. Wolfhagen Sobirey, hat aus Protest gegen die Musikpolitik der Hansestadt seinen Rücktritteingereicht. Anlass ist die kurzfristig erfolgte Kürzung der Mittel für den Tag der Musik Hamburg 2014 von € 33.000 auf € 10.000 und die angekündigte Streichung der kompletten Finanzierung für 2015. Read More →
Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla
Die 27-jährige litauische Dirigentin Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla tritt mit der Spielzeit 2015/16 die Nachfolge von Leo Hussain als Musikdirektorin am Salzburger Landestheater an. Im Bewerbungsverfahren setzte sie sich gegen insgesamt 180 Bewerber durch. Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla begann ihre Theaterlaufbahn als 2. Kapellmeisterin am Theater Heidelberg. Seit der Spielzeit 2013/14 ist sie als 1. Kapellmeisterin am Theater Bern tätig Internationale Aufmerksamkeit brachte ihr 2012 der Sieg beim ‘Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award’ ein.
Seit 2009 wird Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla vom Dirigentenforum des Deutschen Musikrates gefördert. Sie besuchte Kurse unter anderem bei Herbert Blomstedt, Peter Gülke, Kurt Masur und Colin Metters.

Die Opéra Bastille in Paris teilt mit, dass Tenor Roberto Alagna in der heutigen Werther-Vorstellung die Titelrolle nicht singen kann… weil er Vater eines kleinen Mädchens wurde, Malena, das die Mutter, die Sopranistin Aleksandra Kurzak, heute zur Welt gebracht hat.
Born on the 29th of January 1924 into a family of artists – his grandfather Luigi was a painter and his uncle Urbano a sculptor – Luigi Nono took an interest from an early age in cultural history and art. In 2014, Apollon Musagète Quartet, soprano Ruby Hughes and violinist Itamar Zorman receive Awards from the Borletti-Buitoni Trust (BBT) in recognition of their enterprising careers and distinctive talent. Apollon Musagète has founded a festival while its spiritual mentor, Apollo, is the inspiration for many of the key works it commissions. Kevin Mallon
Opera Lyra, Ottawa, has appointed the British conductor Kevin Mallon as its interim artistic director replacing Tyrone Paterson, who will step down at the end of the currentr season. Mallon, who is also the music director of Ottawa’s Thirteen Strings chamber orchestra, has been hired to a one year contract which begins July 1. Mallon is also music director for the Aradia Ensemble of Toronto which he founded and he is the conductor of Orchestra Toronto. Mallon is known for his numerous recordings with Naxos.
