The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (Ohio) has appointed Romanian conductor Cristian Macelaru, 44, as its 14th Music Director, succeeding Louis Langrée. Macelaru will begin his five-year term as Music Director in the 2024-25 season, serving as Music Director Designate in the first year.
Macelaru is chief conductor of the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne until the end of the 2024-2025 season, and is to take the title of Artistic Partner for the 2025-2026 season. He is also Music Director of the Orchestre National de France (ONF). In September 2022, the ONF announced an extension to Macelaru’s contract through 2027. In August of 2023, Macelaru led his first season as Artistic Director of the George Enescu Festival.
