The Filarmonica della Scala has named 70-year-old Myung-Whun Chung Conductor Emeritus in recognition of their 35-year partnership. Since his first performance in 1989, Myung-Whun has conducted 120 concerts at La Scala and on tour. Of the appointment, Vice-President Damiano Cottalasso said, “This nomination is a sign of continuity, there are many projects for the next few years and now the maestro will be at the forefront…not only the musical but [also the] human relationship will be strengthened.”
The South-Korean conductor has had longstanding partnerships with some of the world’s most celebrated orchestras, and has cited his love of Italy as the basis for his extensive work there. He was Principal Conductor of the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia from 1997–2005 and was Principal Guest Conductor with Teatro Comunale di Firenze from 1987–1992. Elsewhere, Myung-Whun has held music directorships with Opéra de Paris-Bastille, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, and Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra, and is currently Honorary Music Director of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of Staatskapelle Dresden.
