The Tenth International Competition for Young Opera Singers Elena Obraztsova begun yesterday in St. Petersburg. The singer who died in January has not been replaced as President of the jury, and her fellow jury members and the candidates consider her as the invisible president of the Jury. Would she, by the way, be more invisible than Valery Gergiev, whose sister, Larissa is the chairwoman of the competition’s board of trustees (Gergieva is the artistic director of the Academy of Young Singers of the Mariinsky Theatre)?
This is the first contest, which takes place without the founder Elena Obraztsova and it is dedicated to her memory. The jury comprises Fiorenza Cossotto (Italy), Eva Marton (Hungary), Tamara Sinjavsky (Russia), Makvala Kasrashvili (Russia), Larisa Gergiev (Russia), Richard Bohning (Australia), Richard Radzinsky (USA), Ioan Holender (Austria), Miguel Lerin (Spain), Anatoly Gusev (Italy), Exper Robert (France) and Sung-Bin Kim (South Korea).
