The Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra announced the appointment of Swiss conductor Thierry Fischer as its next Music Director from March 2020. Fischer will conduct the Orchestra for eight weeks in 2020 and for 12 weeks in subsequent years. According to a statement by the orchestra, the Swiss conductor was the search committee’s first choice. He succeeds Marin Alsop in the post, who has been named Conductor Emeritus. Since her appointment in 2012, Alsop is credited with having raised the quality of music making by the Orchestra.
Thierry Fischer has been Music Director of the Utah Symphony since 2009 and will finish his final term in summer 2022, becoming Music Director Emeritus. He has been Principal Guest of the Seoul Philharmonic since 2017 (contract extended to the end of 2020).
