Canadian violinist Timothy Chooi, 24, has been awarded First Prize at the 2018 Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition in Hannover. 19-year-old Dmytro Udovychenko from Ukraine won Second Prize, Cosima Soulez Larivière (21, France/Netherlands) Third Prize.
Timothy Chooi is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, and currently a post graduate student at The Juilliard School. He will receive €50,000, the three year loan of a Giovanni Battista Guadagnini violin, an international CD release and a number of important international performance opportunities.
The 2018 jury comprised Salvatore Accardo, Andrej Bielow, Masafumi Hori, Kyung Sun Lee, Silvia Marcovici, Qian Zhou, Ulf Schneider, Vilmos Szabadi and Pavel Vernikov.
