At Toronto Symphony, June 2018 is a month-long tribute to Peter Oundjian, celebrating his 14 seasons as Music Director, with many guest artists, a free midday concert, ‘and many emotions’, the press release says. Farewells for Music Directors are not often so brilliantly commemorated. Sir Simon’s departure from Berlin is only one confirmation of such an opinion.
The Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) will honour Peter Oundjian with the title of Conductor Emeritus when he completes his tenure as Music Director of the TSO at the end of the 2017/18 season. Over the course of his tenure, Oundjian has selected almost half of the current musicians of the Orchestra-including Concertmaster Jonathan Crow and two-thirds of the principal players.
In June he will conduct a dozen concerts, and the season culminates with three rousing performances of Beethoven’s mighty Symphony 9.
