« Wo soll ich mich erquicken?“ heißt es in der Tenor-Arie von Bachs Johannespassion, nachdem Petrus Jesus verleugnet hatte. Wo soll ich mich erquicken – eine Frage, die sich bei dieser Produktion unausweichlich stellt.
Gleich der hochromantisch angelegte Eingangschor, begleitet von einem mit viel Legato, großem Bogen und grummelndem Bass spielenden Orchester lässt nichts Gutes ahnen.
In Bachs Passionen geht es vor allem ums Erzählen – musikalisch und auch textuell. Beides kommt beim Cantata Collective definitiv zu kurz. Das Orchester spielt unausgewogen, wenig rhetorisch. Die Solisten kämpfen mit dem deutschen Text und manche zudem mit den rein stimmlichen Anforderungen und der Intonation.
Cantata Collective beschreibt sich als das einzige professionelle Ensemble in San Francisco, das sich der Pflege von Bachs Kantatenwerk widmet. Den Nachweis hat es mit dieser Aufnahme sicher nicht erbracht.
« Where shall I find relief? » the tenor aria of Bach’s St. John Passion says, after Peter has denied Jesus. Where shall I find relief?- a question that inevitably arises in this production.
Right away, the highly romanticized opening chorus, accompanied by an orchestra playing with lots of legato, a big bow and grumbling bass, does not bode well.
Bach’s Passions are all about storytelling – musically and textually. Both definitely come up short with the Cantata Collective. The orchestra’s playing is unbalanced, not very rhetorical. The soloists struggle with the German text and some also with the purely vocal demands and intonation.
Cantata Collective describes itself as the only professional ensemble in San Francisco dedicated to the performance of Bach’s cantata works. It certainly has not proved it with this recording.
