Romanian violinist Eugen Sârbu died yesterday in London according to Radio Romania Muzical. The musician, who was born in 1950, had an impressive international career.
He studied at the Bucharest Conservatory, then in Paris and at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, and in 1978 he won the Paganini Competition in Genoa and the Carl Flesch International Competition in London. Eugen Sârbu, playing on a valuable Stradivarius instrument built in 1729, has been applauded in major concert halls and has performed with renowned orchestras. In 1982 he became conductor and soloist of the European Master Orchestra. He has premiered numerous works, including the concerto for violin and orchestra dedicated to him by the Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara.
