Der fünfundzwanzigjährige chinesische Pianist Xi Zhai, der bereits ein Lehramt in Frankfurt hat, besitzt, wie die meisten Asiaten, eine hervorragende Technik. Aber glücklicherweise begrenzt sich Xi Zhais Spiel nicht nur auf eine fulminante virtuose Leichtigkeit, sondern seine Interpretationen sind immer der Musik selbst verpflichtet. Dabei fällt auf, dass Zhai einen besonderen Blick für das Ganze hat und seine Interpretationen sich organisch entwickeln. Das verleiht der Musik selbst in den schnellen Teilen einen sehr natürlichen Atem. Die typische Chopin-Virtuosität wird meisterhaft ausgespielt, dient dem Pianisten aber nie zum Selbstzweck. Im Gegenteil, Xi Zhai gelingt es immer wieder, seine virtuosen Läufe mit einem glasklaren und einem äußerst präzisen Spiel zu kombinieren, so dass Chopins Musik hier (und auch dank der exzellenten Aufnahmetechnik) von einen mustergültigen Transparenz und Differenziertheit profitiert. Darüber hinaus ist Xi Zhais Spiel sehr musikantisch und macht dem Hörer durch seine mitreißende Gestaltung in jedem Moment große Freude.
Twenty-five-year-old Chinese pianist Xi Zhai, who already holds a teaching post in Frankfurt, possesses, like most Asians, an outstanding technique. But fortunately, Xi Zhai’s playing is not limited to brilliant virtuoso ease; his interpretations are always committed to the music itself. It is striking that Zhai has a special eye for the whole and that his interpretations grow and develop quasi organically. This gives the music a very natural breath even in the fast parts. The typical Chopin virtuosity is masterfully played out, but never serves the pianist as an end in itself. On the contrary, Xi Zhai succeeds again and again in combining his virtuoso runs with crystal-clear and extremely precise playing, so that Chopin’s music benefits here (and also thanks to the excellent recording technique) from an exemplary transparency and differentiation. Moreover, Xi Zhai’s playing is very musically shaped and gives the listener great pleasure at every moment.
