Für das Jahr 1876 hatte Tchaikovsky einen Jahresvertrag unterzeichnet, den er bald als sehr lästig empfinden sollte: er musste für die in Petersburg erscheinende Musikzeitung Nuvellist jeden Monat ein Charakterstück liefern, das der jeweiligen Jahreszeit entsprach. Nach zwölf Monaten war der Zyklus komplett. Uneinheitlich ist er nicht geworden.

Das musikalisch interessante und überaus stimmungsreiche Werk hat der 81-jährige russische Pianist Vladimir Tropp zwischen zwei von Tchaikovskys Nocturnes platziert. Der Pianist ist primär nicht auf Brillanz und Virtuosität aus, sondern spielt sehr lyrisch – leider summt er manchmal auch mit – und vor allem sehr poetisch. Dabei ist sein Spiel reich und farbig, so dass eine durchwegs exzellente CD von hohem künstlerischem Rang zustande kam.

Tchaikovsky had signed an annual contract for 1876, which he soon found very tiresome: for the music newspaper Nuvellist, published in Petersburg, he had to deliver each month a character piece corresponding to the respective season. After twelve months the cycle was complete. Fortunately, it did not become inconsistent.
The 81-year-old Russian pianist Vladimir Tropp placed the musically interesting and extremely atmospheric work between two of Tchaikovsky’s Nocturnes. The pianist is not primarily out for brilliance and virtuosity, but plays very lyrically – unfortunately he sometimes hums along – and above all very poetically. At the same time his playing is rich and colourful, resulting in a really excellent CD of high artistic standing.
