Diese bereits zehn Jahre alte Liveaufnahme der Fünften Symphonie von Piotr Tchaikovsky ist, aufs Ganze gesehen, eine gute Interpretation, aber eigentlich nicht herausragend genug, um in der Werk-Diskographie wirklich wichtig zu werden. Es gibt zwar immer wieder Stellen, wo Mehta das Orchester so zurücknimmt, dass die Musik in den Bauch geht, und das Orchester spielt auch engagiert auf hohem Niveau, aber unter dem Strich reicht es nicht fürs Spitzenpeloton.
Das eigentlich Interessante an der CD ist die Interpretation von Mazeppa, in der Mehta Kraft und orchestrale Glut entfacht und das Programmatische der Tondichtung packend Klang werden lässt. Er hatte dieses Werk mit den Berliner Philharmonikern und dem Los Angeles Philharmonic aufgenommen und holt auch aus dem Orchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks alles heraus, was das Stück verlangt. Der üppige Klang ist beeindruckend.
Die Tonaufnahme ist direkt und angenehm räumlich.
This live recording of Piotr Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, already ten years old, is on the whole a good interpretation, but not really outstanding enough to become really important in the discography of the work. There are repeated passages where Mehta holds the orchestra back in such a way that the music goes to the gut, and the orchestra also plays committedly at a high level, but the bottom line is that it’s not enough for the top peloton.
The really interesting thing about the CD is the interpretation of Mazeppa, in which Mehta unleashes power and orchestral fervor and makes the programmatic nature of the tone poem sound gripping. He had recorded this work with the Berlin Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and he also gets everything the piece demands out of the Bavarian Radio Orchestra. The lush sound is impressive.
The sound recording is direct and pleasantly spacious.
