Arthur Sullivan, vor allem bekannt wegen seiner Opernzusammenarbeit mit dem Autor William S. Gilbert, hat auch andere Kompositionen in seinem Katalog als Opern, und davon ist einiges auf dieser CD zu hören, die vormals bei Marco Polo herauskam.
Diese CD enthält die kompletten Partituren von zwei großen Shakespeare-Stücken: Der Kaufmann von Venedig und Heinrich VIII. Sie enthält auch zwei Ouvertüren aus der Frühzeit der Karriere des Komponisten: The Sapphire Necklace (Teil einer Oper, die er nie vollendete) und In Memoriam, die Hommage des Komponisten an seinen verstorbenen Vater.
Andrew Penny und das irische Rundfunkorchester gehen charmant und entspannt mit der Musik um. Es sind somit vorbildliche Interpretationen, leicht und locker, mit genau so viel Glanz wie die Musik verträgt, ohne überzogen zu wirken. Sie garantieren somit ungetrübte musikalische Unterhaltung.
