Drei Werke für Streichquartett der japanischen Komponistin Mari Tamaki stellt das Sirius Quartet vor. Tamaki, Quantenchemikerin und auch autodidaktisch gebildete Musikerin zeigt als Komponistin eine breite Spannweite von dissonant bis tonal, die sowohl klassische wie auch improvisatorische Elemente und Einflüsse der Avantgarde einbezieht. Die vorgestellten Stücke bleiben trotz ihrer außermusikalischen Hintergründe spieltechnisch dem bekannten Hörbild treu und entwickeln sogar bis zu Walzerseligem unangestrengte Klänge.
‘against the river stream’ (Gegen den Flusslauf) geht auf die japanische Sportart Sawanobori zurück, bei der der Sportler kaskadenartige Felsen im Wasserfall hinaufklettert. ‘Parallele Realitäten’ forscht der Vorstellung nach, dass es neben der erlebten Realität weitere parallel existierende Realitäten gibt. ‘sneak into the Q-city’ (Schleichen in die Q-Stadt) ist von dem gleichnamigen Werk des japanischen Malers Iori Mamiya inspiriert und folgt einem Gedankentrip, bei dem der Geist in sein Gehirn reist und sich dort umsieht. Dabei hat der Buchstabe Q drei Bedeutungen: Quest, Quantum und Quiet, also Suche, Dosis und Leise. Von Gefühl angespannter Dissonanz bis zu völliger Harmonie reicht die Entwicklung.
Das Sirius Quartet, dass sich in seinen Programmen ähnlich weitgefächert präsentiert, hat keine Schwierigkeiten, die hier vorgestellten Werke, die doch insgesamt recht zahm daher kommen, in ihrer Vielseitigkeit und ihrem Flair zu erfassen und die sowohl andeutungsweise vom Rock oder Jazz inspirierte und vor allem klassisch geprägte polyglotte Musik ebenso fesselnd wie beruhigend darzustellen.
The Sirius Quartet presents three works for string quartet by Japanese composer Mari Tamaki. Tamaki, a quantum chemist and self-taught musician, displays a broad range as a composer, from dissonant to tonal, incorporating both classical and improvisational elements and avant-garde influences. Despite their non-musical backgrounds, the pieces presented remain true to the familiar aural image in terms of playing technique and even develop unstrained sounds to the point of being waltz-like.
‘against the river stream’ goes back to the Japanese sport Sawanobori, in which the athlete climbs up cascading rocks in a waterfall. ‘parallel realities’ explores the idea that there are other parallel realities in addition to the reality we experience. ‘sneak into the Q-city’ is inspired by the work of the same name by Japanese painter Iori Mamiya and follows a mind trip in which the mind travels into its brain and looks around. The letter Q has three meanings: Quest, Quantum and Quiet, meaning search, dose and quiet. The development ranges from a feeling of tense dissonance to complete harmony.
The Sirius Quartet, whose programs are similarly wide-ranging, has no difficulty in capturing the versatility and flair of the works presented here, which on the whole come across as rather tame, and in presenting the polyglot music, which is both suggestively inspired by rock or jazz and above all classically influenced, in a way that is both captivating and reassuring.
