Das Album beginnt mit ‘Symphony of Sighs’ aus Stanley Grills Reihe ‘Music for Ukraine’. Es ist eine depressive Musik zu Gedanken, wiewie sich die Welt kontinuierlich zum Schlechten wendet. « Mitten in all dem sitze ich zu Hause und weine Noten », schreibt der amerikanische Komponist.
Die Erste Elegie ist eine sinfonische Vertonung in 5 Sätzen der ersten der Duineser Elegien von Rainer Maria Rilke. Grill sagt: « Mehr als jeder andere Dichter, den ich kenne, schreibt Rilke über die unsichtbare Welt um uns herum. Andere Dichter beschreiben die Schönheiten (oder die Schrecken) der Welt, die wir sehen können, aber Rilke verwendet Worte, die in dieser Welt verwurzelt sein mögen, nur um sie zu verlassen und eine Tür zu öffnen, die über sie hinausgeht, zu dem, was wir nicht ergründen können. »
Grill bezeichnet ‘Die Erste Elegie’ als Konzert für Gesang und Orchester, und in Form und Ausdruck kann man es in der Folge der deutschen Orchesterlieder sehen, ausdrucks- und klangfarbenreich, wobei das Orchester das Wort nachdrücklich untermalt.
Lisa Rombach singt die Rilke-Texte mit warmer und gut geführter Stimme.
The album begins with ‘Symphony of Sighs’, from Stanley Grill’s ‘Music for Ukraine’ series. It is a depressive music to thoughts of how the world is continuously changing for the worse « In the midst of all this I sit at home and cry notes, » writes the American composer.
The First Elegy is a symphonic setting in 5 movements of the first of Rainer Maria Rilke’s Duino Elegies Grill says, « It is Rilke, more so than any other poet with whom I am familiar, who writes about the invisible world around us. Other poets describe the beauties (or the terrors) of the world we can see, but Rilke uses words that may be rooted in that world only to leave it and open a door beyond that to what we cannot fathom. »
Grill calls ‘Die Erste Elegie’ a concerto for voice and orchestra, and in form and expression it can be seen in the succession of the great German orchestral songs, rich in expression and tonal color, with the orchestra emphatically underscoring the words.
Lisa Rombach sings the Rilke texts with a warm and well-conducted voice.
