Ukrainian-born Finnish conductor Dalia Stasevska, 36, has been awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society’s 2020 Conductor Award. The two other nominees in the Conductor Award category were Martyn Brabbins and Jonathon Heyward.
The jury commented: « Dalia Stasevska made an instant impression at the 2019 Proms as the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s new Principal Guest Conductor. She possesses a dynamite combination of energy and integrity, sure to make this a thrilling collaboration in the years to come. »
Stasevska will be Chief Conductor of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra from 2021/22 season.
Her name was in the media in the ferocious discussion whether the colonial and racist text of some imperialist British songs performed at the Last Night of The Proms in September 2020 were to be sung or not. Since she was morally molested and even received threats, this Award looks like a consolation and reparation.
