Das kanadische Geschwister-Duo Cheng stellt sich diesmal mit einem zeitgenössischen Programm vor. Sie beginnen mit dem Portrait of an Imaginary Sibling des kanadischen Komponisten Dinuk Wijeratne (*1978), der sich vom Scherzo von Beethovens dritter Cellosonate inspirieren ließ und ein effektvolles, sehr originelles klanglich opulentes und attraktives Stück schrieb, welches das Duo Cheng fulminant spielt.

Der 1975 geborene Kanadier Vincent Ho präsentiert mit Horizon Images (2017) Klangbilder der kanadischen Prärien, die anfangs in ruhigen Passagen die Weite der Landschaft beschreiben, im zweiten Satz  Emotionen kondensieren und im dritten, Windstorm, zu virtuosen Eskapaden führen, die den Cellisten besonders stark herausfordern. Doch Bryan Cheng ist technisch so sicher, dass man über diese Virtuosität am Cello nur staunen kann.

Dann folgt Moon’s Reflection Upon a Spring, eine bekannte Komposition des Chinesen Hua Yanjun in einer einfühlsamen Bearbeitung vom Duo Cheng2.

Es folgen dann zwei Stücke der 1949 geborenen Komponistin  Alexina Louie, Pond Mirrors Bright Sky und Wild Horse Running, in denen die kontrastreiche Musik von poetisch zu hoch dramatisch wechselt.

Der Cellist und Komponist Paul Wiancko (*1983) komponierte seine Sonate

Shifting Baselines im Jahre 2020). Der Komponist sagt: « Shifting Baselines ist gleichzeitig eine Reflexion über meine anhaltende Reise mit Beethovens C-Dur-Sonate, ein Liebesbrief an das Cello, und ein Versuch, meine eigene musikalische Sprache auf ihre Kernelemente zu reduzieren. » Das ergibt eine unterschiedlich attraktive Musik, der es für meinen Geschmack an Substanz fehlt.

Das ursprünglich für die chinesische Geige Erhu komponierte Racing Horses ist in einer Bearbeitung des Cheng² Duo zu hören und sorgt für einen verspielt-virtuosen, mitreißenden Abschluss.

The Canadian sibling duo Cheng presents itself this time with a contemporary program. They begin with Portrait of an Imaginary Sibling by Canadian composer Dinuk Wijeratne (b. 1978), who was inspired by the Scherzo of Beethoven’s Third Cello Sonata and wrote an effective, highly original sonically opulent and attractive piece, which Duo Cheng plays brilliantly.

In Horizon Images (2017), Canadian Vincent Ho, born in 1975, presents musical images of the Canadian prairies. The work begins with quiet passages describing the vastness of the landscape, condenses emotions in the second movement, and leads to virtuosic escapades in the third, Windstorm, that are particularly challenging for the cellist. But Bryan Cheng is so technically assured that one can only marvel at this virtuosity on the cello.

Shifting Baselines in 2020) of which the composer says, « Shifting Baselines is at once a reflection on my ongoing journey with Beethoven’s C major sonata, a love letter to the cello, and an attempt to reduce my own musical language to its core elements. » This results in variously attractive music that lacks substance for my taste.

Racing Horses, originally composed for the Chinese violin erhu, is heard in an arrangement by the Cheng² Duo and makes for a playful, virtuosic, rousing conclusion.
